Being born an American, is like winning the lottery

A friend of mine is teaching on Turkmenistan. After two months of living there, here is her take on our great country:

After being here, Scott and I are much more thankful that we were born in America. To see the life that we could be stuck living, makes us appreciate the many freedoms that we have in America. It makes us really realize the importance of freedom and democracy, and we now have so much more pride in our country and what it represents. So many people in America don’t realize how lucky they are. People complain about their rights and how they think they are getting taken away. They just need to come here and spend a week. In America, you can say all the bad things you want about the President. You can stand on a street corner yelling about how much you hate him; you can even say it to his face. Nothing will happen to you. If you even spoke badly here, very bad things would happen to you and your family. We have the freedom to vote for President, along with the passing of many different laws. That is not something that happens here. I wish that I was better at expressing how important this has become to us, and how it has changed us. I guess I just want to remind all of you guys that you won the lottery by being born in America. You should be thankful every day for all the rights you have and take advantage of every day.
